Writing this paper had opened my eyes to a lot of different things. From the mind map, I took the topics I thought would have a lot of research and studies about. I then did research on the topics, pulling facts and statistics from both sides. The reason I did this was because I wanted to write my paper from a neutral stance, trying not to be biased. Towards the end of the paper I get a little biased, expressing how difficult the test are, how long the process is, and how challenging their journeys are. From my research, I learned a lot. I learned that immigrants lower the price of goods for consumers. I also have always heard “Immigrants take our jobs”. However, most of the jobs they take don't require much education, so they affecting those without a higher education. I also didn't realize how many Americans fail the Citizenship test. I still can't wrap my head around the fact that we don't require natives to know but require immigrants. I connected my essay to the class by using the Amazing Grace book and articles. The book is filled with stories and statistics of families who are impoverished. This was a great source to show how many Americans we can't support, and immigration will only make these numbers greater. Although the caravan articles were mainly about mislead information, they were very helpful in explaining why they come and how their journey is. For instance, they expressed what they flee from and what they face when coming to the United States. Because many have opinions formed on immigration solely how it impacts them, and don't take any other matters into mind, I wanted to find a quote that demonstrated not having a biased opinion and keeping an open mind. The best one I found was the one about the baseball player. Since I decided to write my paper from a neutral stance, it was contradicting to show both sides of the topic. The readings and discussions throughout the semester really opened my mind to a lot of things, especially citizenship. In my final paper about illegal immigration, I incorporated aspects of citizenship. I really liked the book Soul of a Citizen because Loeb expresses how important engagement and speaking up is in our country. I thought the parts that we read were very inspiring. Additionally, Amazing Grace was a huge eye-opener to a few of the problems that we are sheltered from. The book really changed my outlook on life, becoming more appreciative for all the little things I am fortunate for.
